Most of our team comes from the immediate community we operate in and we are proud to be in a position to support local development in Saldanha Bay.

Our VISION is to produce and sell sustainably grown, premium quality Oysters that are so healthy and delicious, that our customers keep coming back for more.

Our MISSION is to produce and supply the highest quality Oysters that South Africa has to offer, whilst ensuring that our business operates in the best interests of our employees, customers and the environment.
OUR PRODUCT

Our farm is located in Saldanha Bay’s “Big Bay” area. It's the perfect spot for growing our oysters, because they are able to feed 24 hours a day on the nutrient rich waters brought into the bay by up-welled oceanic currents from the cold Benguela Large Marine Ecosystem, one of the most productive coastal environments in the world. The natural kelp particles and plankton present in the water make our oysters plump and juicy, with a creamy, silky smooth texture and a sweet, buttery finish.
Our oyster spat is procured locally from a recognised hatchery in South Africa, where they are bred under carefully controlled conditions. Once delivered, they are planted at sea where they grow for approximately 12 - 18 months before being harvested, purged (for 42 hours), packaged and shipped to customer destinations around the world.

SUSTAINABLE FARMING

We believe in responsible and sustainable farming practices.
Oysters and Mussels appear on the WWF-SASSI Green List (World Wildlife Fund Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative). Seafood appearing on this list are defined as follows:
“These are the most sustainable choices from the healthiest and most well-managed fish populations. These species can handle current fishing pressure or are farmed in a manner that does not harm the environment. This is the list we encourage you to choose from.”
In aquaculture, ropes are suspended in the waters of sheltered bays, like Saldanha Bay, and seeded with young oysters or mussels. They grow on the ropes and feed on naturally occurring kelp and plankton particles in the water. They are truly organic because all they need to flourish is what mother nature provides and the loving and caring husbandry offered by our dedicated team.
As filter feeders, these amazing creatures enhance water quality by reducing the amount of organic matter and harmful nutrients present in the water column, which is why they are often referred to as “natures ocean cleaners”.
BLP conducts regular maintenance on our farm and farming infrastructure, and as such, we are able to quickly identify and respond to anything that could damage or harm the environment.
The sea is our livelihood, so it's in our best interest to ensure that we maintain a pristine environment for all marine life, including our beautiful oysters.
HEALTH & NUTRITION
BLP is part of The South African Shellfish Monitoring & Control Programme, a rigorous shellfish monitoring and testing programme. This ensures that all products leaving South African aquaculture farms are perfectly safe and fit for human consumption.
Oysters are a nutritious and delicious addition to any well balanced diet for most people and are low in calories yet loaded with nutrients, including protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Unlike many other seafood sources, oysters contain all three major classes of omega-3s and one serving contains 0.14g ALA, 0.23g DHA and 0.30g EPA.
Oysters are:
• High in protein • High in zinc and iron • High in vitamins A and B12 • High in Omega 3 fatty acids • Low in calories • Low in fat
While shellfish and molluscs have many health benefits, it's important to note that they could contain heavy metals that can cause food borne illness and allergic reactions in some people, which is why it’s important to purchase oysters and mussels from reputable farms, where products are properly handled, purged and regularly screened and tested for biological and chemical contaminants or pollutants, before being released into the market.
